FIRST CASUALTY REPORTS by John Patrick Liteky

FIRST CASUALTY REPORTS

How comes it
We only hear and see
Via our spiffy direct tvs’
   Our cable connected
   And compact lap tops
In stereo and full spectrum colored tones
   Reports, up to the moment
   Of always, always young men
In vivid detail – from initial deaths
In remotest real estate to full blown
Funeral rites – the whole Boy Scout drill
   Flags, gun salutes, weeping families
At gravesides and, whenever photo ops
   Fit the prez’s schedule,
   The man himself leaning down
   With textbook words of comfort
And practiced tears, just a little,
As he tells the new young widows
   And middle aged moms and
   Grandparents too, not yet sixty,
“How grateful this nation is” ?
When, oh when, will we ever see
Such honors done for a fat’n happy
Senator/Congressman who voted
With such patriotic fervor for
The funds to finance these wars
Which, in sum, protect and defend our money
Making national security? Huh?
