     On June 24, 1982, at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament held at UN Headquarters in New Your, then Mayor Takeshi Araki of Hiroshima proposed a new "Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward Abolition of Nuclear Weapons". This proposal offered cities a way to transcend national borders and work together to press for nuclear abolition.

   Around the world this emergency campaign is generating waves of support. This past February, the European Parliment passed by overwhelming majority a resolution specifically supporting the Mayors for Peace Campaign. At their general assembly in June, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, representing 1,183 U.S. cities, passed by acclamation an even stronger resolution. More information is available at:
