Atlanta to Oak Ridge
Peace Pilgrimage

2002

The Peace Pilgrimage to Oak Ridge began in 1999 and is an annual event of Nipponzan Myohoji - Atlanta Dojo.

When we first started, the walk began on July 16, which is the anniversary of the first atomic bomb test, called the Trinity test, in the desert of New Mexico. This is the dawn of the nuclear weapons age.

The walk concluded on August 6, the anniversary of bombing of Hiroshima, the first use of nuclear weapons against humanity and the Earth. We are not always able to start and end exactly on those days, but the walk basically is framed by those two events.

Our walk always begins at the tomb of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., here in Atlanta, because Dr. King taught America about nonviolence in his words and by his actions.

We walk about 280 miles to Oak Ridge, TN, because the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge is where the uranium for the Hiroshima bomb was enriched and because Y-12 is the last full scale nuclear weapons production facility in the U.S. Our walk is a prayer for the end of ALL nuclear weapons.
