Peacemakers On The Scene

International War Protest
Vienna Austria - 03/20/2004

Here in Vienna, Austria around 7,000 people turned out for the demonstration on Saturday. While 7,000 might not seem like a large number, you must remember Austria is a small country and it has no troops in Iraq. We walked from Westbahnhof (one of the main underground stations) down the lenght of Mariahilfer Strasse (one of the main shopping areas filled with shoppers) and ending in the city center- Stephansplatz (filled with shoppers and tourists from around the world) where speakers took to a stage they had set-up for the demonstration.

It is worth noting that there was a small number of police along the route but they were very noticable at the three McDonald's restuarants we passed by, one of the few American symbols that stand out here in Vienna. But the everything was peaceful.

On Sunday they followed up with an all day teach-in.
