No I Haven't Lost My Mind

  Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues

Prepare yourselves for shocking news! I'm training to walk a 26.2 mile MARATHON in Kona, Hawaii on June 7th to benefit the American Stroke Association.

No, I haven't lost my mind.... and it's too late for a mid-life crisis. As many of you know, I've trained in dance and martial arts studios since I could walk. However, in my new life as a graphic designer and sole proprietor, I'm finding it harder to get up from the computer, put down the phone and make time for me.

This marathon is a great opportunity to both help myself stay healthy and to help others. By joining the American Stroke Association's Train to End Stroke program, I have a coach, a team to train with, training schedules and clinics - and a reason that makes this more that a personal goal. I'm helping to raise funds for stroke research, education and advocacy programs.

The following are some stroke statistics that you may not be aware of:

Every 45 seconds someone suffers a stroke
Every 3.1 minutes someone dies of a stroke
There are 3.3 million stroke survivors
29% of people who have strokes are under age 65

I will be walking this marathon in honor of Mrs. Marie Beddow, my Stroke Hero. A minutes before her stroke in 1999, Marie was an independent, active 77-year-old, volunteering in a hospital. Today, although her smile is still beautiful and sweet, she is confined to a wheel chair in an extended care facility and speaks with difficulty.

I'm excited to be training on behalf of Marie and others, like 26 year old Catherine Roegge, already a stroke survivor, and still others who wish to remain anonymous. In seconds - these talented adults were robbed of abilities they counted on for a lifetime. I'm hopeful, because the funds our team raises will hel researchers develop better prevention and treatment. I hope to inspire others who are thinking about getting fit to stop "planning" and take the first step.

If you have a friend or a loved one who has been affected by stroke, I would be honored to complete this event in his or her name as well. I invite you to include the person(s)' name on the response form.

Please join me in reaching my fund-raising goal and helping to end stroke. I've committed to raising $4900. Are you able to give a gift of $50.00 or more? Please respond within 2 weeks. Although I'll be gratefully accepting donations of all sizes for months, this will help me measure my fund-raising progress.

Warm thanks for your consideration of this request. A return envelope is enclosed for your reply.
