Prisoners Of Conscience
The Run - Mistakes?

There are a few things that I would do differently if I had to do it all over again.

The first thing that comes to mind is that I should have sent a letter to the warden at FCI Manchester to tell him what the Run was all about and what we were trying to accomplish. I had no idea of the impact this action would have. If I had let the warden know ahead of time that this was not a protest of any sort but rather a prayerful, nonviolent support action we may have avoided the "lock down" at FCI Manchester. We were unofficially criticized for this action from a representative of the SOAW. I regret this but I would do it again. This was absolutely a mistake.

Another thing that comes to mind is that we arrived after dark in Manchester. This was primarily do to the route that I had selected. A portion of the route I laid out that the first runners were responsible for did not permit people on foot. This could have been avoided by driving the route first. I originally planned to do this on my way to Atlanta for the Pilgrimage to the SOAW but I had to leave late and did not have the time to drive it. I would not normally drive the route since it requires expendable resources and adds to the pollution problem. Since most of the runners I know are experienced I expect them to overcome any problems such as this themselves. In this case they did but it took them longer do to this circumstance. I regret we were late but I do not regret not making the "extra" trip to plan the route. Had we started an hour earlier we would have made it in time.

Fortunately Jim was with the group that had the bad route and he was able to get them through it safely.

One last thing I would do would be to send each prisoner a $3.00 Postal money order when I sent them the introduction letter. I was delighted by the number of responses that I received back but I have often wondered if those who sent no reply would have had they the resources to do it.
