Wake Up Call - October 2nd, 2004
Since it was my house we were staying at, my alarm went off at 6:30 am, and I made the rounds to awaken the group of runners gathered there. In a few minutes the coffee was perking and the oatmeal was boiling as everyone struggled to regain their wits. The plan for the morning was to meet Jon Blickenstaff at the prison, have our opening ceremony and circle there, and then drive up to where John had stopped the day before to actually start our miles. We were committed to complete the miles to the Manchester Federal Prison today, a distance of around 84 miles, with the 6 of us. We were to certainly appreciate Mauricio, as he was a marathoner and capable of a 20 mile day. It was clear to us that everyone was going to have to push themselves to make the distance, but we felt strong and confident that we could make it. We did have one small glitch at the beginning, Jon got lost coming to the prison from Cinncinati, and we lost about an hour of precious daylight. We have come to expect these types of things on the runs (our native friends call this indian time, meaning that when the time is right it well happen), it teaches us patience, and once the process was started we left the problem in the dust and it never bothered us again that day.
