April 7th,1992 Radioactive waste polluting the Colorado River report. A TEN MILLION TON pile of nuclear waste has been polluting the Colorado river for decades. This waste was deposited 750 feet from the river near Moab, Utah. At one point, groundwater contaminated by the waste was leaking into the river at an estimated 28,000 gallons a day, although recent Energy Department cleanup efforts slowed the contamination to 15,000 gallons a day. The plans now are to move this waste 30 miles from the river. This job will take an estimated 5 years to complete. This information was extracted from a report by David Hasemyer a staff writer for the UNION-TRIBUNE, printed April 7, 2005. |
