Thanks to Carlisle Quakers Friends Meeting House we had a great place to stay with a lovely welcome by Maureen Lofthouse with hot tea, fresh scones, jam, & fruit – which was very well appreciated. Thank you. Irene Sanderson from North Cumbria Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) had organized a stall space for the walkers in Carlisle main town square for the afternoon. There were plenty of people around that we spoke to, including many young people. The few hours we spent with the local people really was worth the effort as we feel it’s a great opportunity to talk and engage with the local people about a global issue facing us all. We handed out lots of information about Trident Replacement and many people told us how they are opposed to the Replacement. Thank you, Irene for all your support and effort not only towards the walk but to a world without the threat of nuclear weapons. Irene also organized a public meeting in the evening at the Friends Meeting House which created a great discussion about the situation in Australia with the increase in the Uranium Mining industry, about renewable technology and how, we as young people have hope in this world. I thought it was an important circle to share our thoughts and feelings that in turn offers great support and strength to each other. Sometimes rest days are not all that restful, and we all went to sleep rather early, pretty exhausted but absolutely content. |
