The chosen route today saw us leave the busy main road and take the back streets west towards the Irish Sea. We lunched at Allenby from advice by the local Wigton people and to Jamies’ delight feasted on the recommended ice-creams. We gave thanks and as we ate remembered Jon (tap, tap, tap…) from Cincinnatti who walked with us from Dublin to Glasgow and always wanted ice-cream. Sorry no peanut butter flavors!!! Our feet walked across the ever changing land and weather along the Cumbrian Coastal Path. From Allenby we could see the other side of the Solway Firth reminding us of how far we had walked. Just as we arrived into Maryport the rain began and with the famous comment of ‘it’s easing” we got caught in a spectacular down pour. Soaked to the bone we arrived at the Methodist Church in Maryport. We have been leaving the support van at the stay place from the night before and collecting it after we have finished walking for the day. Sometimes we get great support from a local person who can give us a lift back, but today we were on our own. I guess being so close to Sellafield we are entering a town of mixed feelings especially about job security. So it was my turn to grab the van and as I walked to the train station got caught in an incredible hail storm, causing massive flash floods. This left the town in complete chaos for hours and with so much water children playing and running around screaming and playing in it. It was absolutely phenomenal the hail and rain that fell out of the dark sky. The hail stung my cold face and I can’t remember the last time I was this wet. As I got on the train and stood in the door way not wanting to sit down, completely bedraggled and wet…the sun came shining through the dark clouds. |
