“The program has never been about defence, its always been about controlling space, dominating space, denying other countries access to space and the US being the master of space” Bruce Gagnon C0-ordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space On our rest day we took in another part of the Star Wars program and took a drive out to the picturesque and remote Fylingdales Moor in North Yorkshire to see the giant truncated pyramid that marks the whereabouts of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) radar at ‘RAF’ Fylingdales. Accompanying us was the fantastic crew from Yorkshire CND – Dave Webb, Sarah Cartin, Helen Johns and Sylvia Boyes. With Pine Gap in Australia and Menwith Hill in the Star Wars frontline, being Ground Based Relay Stations space based missile tracking system. Fylingdales is part of the early warning ballistic missile defence system. The base transmits microwave beams into the atmosphere to detect the launch of missiles from any where in the world. Once detected, Mill Star (golf ball) transmits this information to the Strategic Launch command which sets off a chain reaction of launch mode missiles through out the world. In under 15 minutes there will be MAD (mutually assured destruction) wiping out all of humanity unless somebody stops the computers!! As we walked up and over the hill, Hattie and I drummed and chanted, and puffed and panted soon stopping in our tracks as we rounded the corner in the misty distance an eery sight of giant golfballs stood in our view. We had a clear view of nearly all of the 30 or so ‘golfballs’ to give us a sense of the massive telecommunications scale this base is operating at. The radomes as they are called are like giant golfballs that cover the satellite dish that is used for international telecommunications, including private telephone calls, faxes and emails intercepted from the U.K, Middle-East, North Africa and the former Soviet Union. There is tons more info on Yorkshire CND’s webpage at ww.cndyorkshire.org.uk |
