a poem by Stuart Randall from Chesterfield Quakers
Footprints for Peace

You came here treading lightly on the earth,
causing no noxious fallout,
creating no crass contamination,
leaving only peaceful footprints.

Your message is in the walking,
impressed into the minds
of all you meet
and all who follow you.

The earth can bear your gentle progress.
No children of Chernobyl
are stunted by your passing;
no citizens of Hiroshima seared in the pavement.

May all whom you encounter
have glimpses of the vision you pursue;
find time to pause
and look beyond the headlong dash
to lemming-like destruction.

Step boldly on your journey.
Walk cheerfully in your quest
to show the world
another, more propitious way.
