War Protest, DC - 01/18/2003 |
The protest was on January 18th or 19th in DC. The day before were the big protest that drew huge crowds. I had gone down early that morning to stand with the Women for Peace: Code Pink, in front of the White House (Sally from our walk was there, she spent months standing out there for Code Pink everyday). A protest was planned for around noon, it had hoped to end up in the park in front of the White House where I ended up taking the pictures. Before the marchers got near the White House the street leading to in front of the White House was closed to pedestrians (it is usually just closed to vehicles). Those of us that had arrived early were allowed to stay, in part because there was a small pro-war contigent next to us, they were holding up signs that spelled out HUMAN SHIELDS (they were to protect the president, as if we posed a threat). So my photos were shot looking out at the street on the side of the park farthest from the White House. The protest was fairly small, a few hundred and ended with a few arrest, I believe those arrested jump the short fence into the park. Prior to that, the police had been quite forceful in removing those that had sat down in the street. . Jeff McKenzie reporting. |
