Earth Day Run - 2004
By Larry Crane

It was earth day 2004, or in the way I like to think about it, we were celebrating Mother Earth’s birthday! Of course I realize that we don’t really know what day Mother Earth was born, exactly, but we had to pick a day to celebrate.

I was with a few of my run/walk buddies and we were determined to burn some sole rubber and put some prayer miles on the road for Mom! My section was from downtown Covington, Ky right on the Ohio riverfront, across the river into Cinncy, Ohio and along the river front for about 5 miles.

It was a beautiful, sunny day to be out and the good company was an added bonus. As we had the opening ceremony, we heard an awful uproar on the other side of the river. It was the “run for the cure”, an annual run to raise awareness and money for breast cancer. I was really impressed, there must have been several thousand runners/walkers. I turned to ask Jim when we would have a run like that one. I crossed the river going opposite to the cure runners and made my way out of downtown Cinncy, headed east along the river.

At this point the activity settled down and I was able to get in a pretty good rhythm and begin to concentrate on the state of Mother Earth and organize my thoughts and prayers. One image kept sitting right on the front of my mind, the earth rise image taken by the Apollo astronauts. It was one of the first photographs to show this beautiful blue spheroid backed by almost limitless blackness. I was struck by the recurring thought of just how fragile, unique, and singular this location in the cosmos is! Thus began “The Blue Orb” , and by the time I was back home the idea was bursting from my head to the word processor. All in all, a great birthday celebration for our Earth Mother!
