Peacemakers On The Scene

Not In Our Name Protest, Cincinnati - 03/22/2003

This protest was organized over the Internet by Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center in Cincinnati Ohio. It was part of a number of on going protests that were planned in the event that the Bush administration proceeded with their proposed illegal war on Iraq.

The protest began at 1:30PM at Fountain Square with a sparse crowd of less than 100.

Over the course of the next 15 to 20 minutes people kept appearing with signs and banners until around 300 had gathered.

There were a number of speakers explaining to the audience their points of view concerning what was going on in Iraq and the evil nature of what our country was doing in this murderous business.

There were quite a few familes involved with their children with them. It was good to see these youngsters starting on the right course to world peace at such young ages.

After the speakers were finished and the protest was officially over most of us went to the south side of the square and formed a line down 5th street displaying our signs and banners. I was once again, suprised at the support the passing vehicles demonstrated by honking and waving the victory sign as they passed. There were very few people with an IQ of one but there were several. We just gave them the victory sign back and waved wildly.

Food Not Bombs supplied us with some goodies to eat and the drummers and dancers, most of whom were at the 10/20/2003 protest, once again supplied us with some "street theater". If it were not for the fact that people were dying as we stood there it would have been a fun experience.

I left about 3:45PM and there were still a fair amount of folks still on the south side wall. There were also still people on the bridge from the Fountain to the Westin with their banners and flags hanging down over 5th street.
