Today is another working “rest” day. We are having a workshop to prepare us for Faslane, the British naval base which houses Trident nuclear submarines. Angie and Anna-Linna from Faslane 365, the group that has organized a year-long vigil and direct action program at Faslane, gave us an excellent workshop on non-violent direct action. We did several activities including role-playing, determining whether several made-up situations were violent or non-violent and whether we would engage in them or not, making quick decisions through consensus, legal briefing, and discussion of possible actions we could take at Faslane. We all agreed they did an excellent job, especially since the day seemed to fly by, and we came away from the experience feeling much like an affinity group.

After another scrumptious meal we had an in-depth discussion about what action we could take at Faslane. About half of us want to do some kind of non-violent direct action which will lead to arrest, while the others want to do support work. We had been assured in the legal briefing that very few of the arrests at Faslane resulted in prosecution by Scotland. The likely outcome would be to spend the night in jail, then be released with a letter stating that Scotland did not choose to prosecute at this time.   Consensus seemed to be building in our group around keeping in the spirit of the walk in the tradition of Nipponzan Myohoji and staying together to blockade the gates of Faslane. There was discussion of the pros and cons of “locking on” whereby we connect ourselves to each other in such a way that it takes more time for the police to break us apart, therefore making our blockade last that much longer. We decided that with two days of walking before we reach Faslane, we would have time to make a final decision about our plans. We had made a good start, and the workshop and discussion made us feel close and supportive of each other.
