In the early hours of March 14th, 2005 all those who gathered in the Oak Ridge - Knoxville area to take part in this historic walk arose, had some breakfast and made ready to begin the walk from the Y12 Complex in Oak Ridge to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty talks at the United Nations in New York City.
This walk is somewhat different that most of those you will find archived on peacehq. Most actions in the peacehq archives are actions that are planned, organized and executed by a single organization. Many people from different groups take part in quite a few of these actions. None the less they are usually put on by one organization. This walk however, was planned and organized by a number of different organizations.
To start with Marcus Atkinson, co-founder of the International Peace Pilgrimage, first suggested the idea to both Peacehq and
Jim Toren, co-founder of
FootPrints For Peace via email shortly after concluding the International Peace Pilgrimage - Roxby Downs, Australia to Hiroshima Japan - 2003-2004. Marcus had many other contacts and soon Jun San of Nipponzan Myohoji(Taking A Path to Peace), joined as well as
Ralph Hutchison, director of the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance and
Steve Leeper with Mayors for Peace. This group of organizations as well as those individuals joining this walk is called The
International Coalition For A Nuclear Free Future as far as this archive is concerned.
