Today is the anniversary of the 40th year of Palestinian Occupation, and this took up much of my thoughts for the day.

Even though it reached high temperatures, not much shade along the A75 with cars roaring past, and a 19 mile day – nothing seemed too hard when I thought about what the land and people have experienced in Palestine over the last 40 years.

In the beautiful surrounds of Kirkcowan, cool foot baths and peppermint foot spray awaited the arrival of our weary bodies. As our feet soaked in the backyard of Mary’s home, Kirsty served us cold homemade lemonade. Glad to be relaxing after a long day we had time to spend with Mary, who was hosting us for the night and also had prepared a delicious meal. Again we feasted much to the laughter of Dan’s hilarious comments about us fast becoming known as the “Peace Puddings” or the “Peace Locusts”.

Mary had put much energy into organizing a great stay for us, that after dinner we walked across the road to the Town Hall for a public meeting. About 20 of us gathered for a casual discussion about the walk, and about the area we are walking in – especially as we are now very close to the Depleted Uranium Test Range in Dundrennan. Depleted Uranium weapons are tested at the Kirkudbright Ranges near Dundrennan. We were told in the meeting that ‘there have been almost 100 misfirings and the land is still contaminated’. The local people are very concerned about the health affects of the DU Range as there is definite cancer and leukaemia clusters in the area.

We were honored and fortunate to have many young people in the audience and we shared with them stories, song and music from Australia. We told them the story of Sudako and gave each a Peace Crane to carry with them in hope of a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons. It was a great night, and we really want to thank all those that had helped to organise the evening, the meal, and the tea and cakes afterwards, and especially to the young children who sat through the meeting and listened to the stories.
