The heavy rain did not stop today until a clearing after lunch. The cold wind blew off the coast, and we didn’t really want to stop for many breaks along the way. We were all pretty much soaked to the bone within the first hour of walking. However at one break we found shelter in an under ground tunnel – and got quite a surprise to find a group of young kids already enjoying the dry space. We realized that they were in class – spray painting the walls!! We found out this was a local government initiative to stop vandalism and so these young people where learning the art of spray painting a beautiful mural. We gave a small talk about what were doing and ended with a song. I love the surprise & random interactions we have along the way – with all different people and age groups. Back out in the rain and wind we kept moving at a swift pace. We found a very local pub on the side of the road that was kind to allow us to enter dripping wet and soaked to the bone. We enjoyed the warmth of indoors and the cuppa’s we ordered but more enjoyable was the music Dan decided to choose on the juke box – “Here comes the Rain!!”. The rain did ease and we managed a slight detour to visit Ruthwell Cross – an Ancient Monument dated from 1642 in the Anglo-Saxon Times. I think we all enjoyed finally reaching our destination of Cummertrees, and quickly turned on the heating in the Village Hall – our stay place for the evening. It was a well appreciated overnight stay place as apart from the Primary School this is the only structure standing in Cummertrees!! And not only this but much of the houses that exist around the area is because of the Chapelcross Nuclear Power Plant (now being decommissioned). So we really gave thanks to a great stay and shared a beautiful dinner together that finished with Yu-sans’ gift to each of the walkers of delicious home baked cookies. Thank you Yu-san and for my special massage!! |
