Chapel Cross is one of the first nuclear power plants in the UK dating back to the 1950’s. Due to its age it’s currently being decommissioned. This is an incredible sight, however we have heard recently this is one of the area’s targeted by the Government for a new power plant.

Chapel Cross Nuclear Power Plant was used in creating Britain’s nuclear weapons program during the 1950’s. The Atomic Bombs that were tested by the British Military in the Australian desert during the 1950’s and 60’s were made with materials created by Chapel Cross and Sellafield Nuclear Facilities. My thoughts as we walked up to the gates were on remembering the people of Australia who have been affected by these Atomic Tests, especially the Aboriginal people from this area.

In remembering all the people around the world that have been affected by the nuclear industry we each offered our prayers, messages and songs at the main gate.

We had a deep and reflective discussion about linking nuclear power with nuclear weapons and connecting this on a global perspective. Our hope is to see all the power plants being decommissioned immediately and an increase in sustainable technology for power being used in the near future. We pray for a future without uranium mining, without nuclear power, without weapons, and without the radioactive waste.
