When Marcus and I first began organizing the Peace Walk, we were invited by the Barrow Peace Co. to come and talk about the walk and see if we can make an arrangement to walk in Barrow in Furness – the port where BAE Systems make the nuclear submarines. We thought this was an important place to walk especially with the debate about ‘Trident Replacement”- considering that the most likely option the Government will do will be to upgrade the Trident missiles and order new submarines. “These could be a purpose built fleet from a new design or could incorporate the design of the conventionally armed new Astute class submarine being developed by BAE Systems”. CND Briefing September 2006 pg 6. **BAE Systems is Britain’s largest arms company and is number four in the world alongside Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. So with the careful help of Ulverston Quakers and Barrow Peace Co. we put together a walk from Ulverston to Barrown in Furness. After the vigil at the Gates of Sellafield we made our way to Ulverston Quaker Friends Meeting House, and were welcomed by many of the local people here with dinner. The following morning we met with more of the local people who took us down to Ulverston Main Square and began our short walk to Barrow. Thank you to all those involved in the organizing of our stay and for the walk. |
