We had a slight schedule change today as we could not find a stay place in Feltham so we decided that we would walk to Uxbridge. This actually worked in our favor as we were able to walk to the Harmonsworth Immigration Removal Centre where up to 360 people can be detained while the UK governments’ decides on their fate. As with many Detention Centre’s around the world, hunger strikes, rioting and self harm are endemic and in Britain’s largest detention centres, detainees are becoming increasingly desperate about living in what they claim “are deteriorating This week we heard news that a week long hunger strike by 28 Tamil asylum seekers was continuing at Harmonsworth to stop the British Governments enforcing deportations to Sri Lanka of asylum applications. The hunger strikers want Tamil applications to be taken off Britain’s asylum processing ‘fast track’ so as to allow sufficient time for appeals against deportations to be conducted. So from Slough we walked to the Harmonsworth to hold a small, yet powerful vigil at the front gates of the centre. We made peace cranes and wrote a letter of solidarity and support to the people being held in the centre. Moving on we continued to walk towards Uxbridge, where again the Quakers fully supported the walk with a lovely welcome by some members and the local media. With the help of Alfred, we had organized a few different homestays for the walkers so that we could catch up on clothes washing and showers. Thank you very much to Uxbridge Quakers, especially Alfred Moon, Lucy & family who organized & provided great delights for the walkers – including a trampoline for ‘game’ walkers!! |
