The Peace Bus

Navigation Bar Submit Feedback    When the Peace Bus first arrived at Peace Hostel Amelia it was covered by a "Great Story", click here to read it. Becky and Tyler were on their way to the Graftton Peace Pagoda to join Jun San on another walk and had stopped at Peace Hostle Amelia to rest and relax from their long journey from Washington on the west coast.

The bus had some problems that they had to fix before they could continue. The most serious was a bad wheel. The tires were pretty much shot and they had some flats on the way. They had to drive on the wheel and it was damaged beyond repair. Some of the other tires would not hold air because the wheels had also been damaged at some point in time.

If you have ever tried to get parts for a 40 year old Volkswagon van you know that it is impossible to find them quickly. So Becky and Tyler had to leave before we could get it fixed. It was still waiting parts when they were finished with their walk so they headed home to Portland. Becky simply sent Jim the title and the Peace Bus belonged to Peace Hostel Amelia!

While Jim Toren was at Sun Dance, in Minnisota, supporting Albert RunningWolf the Peace Van broke down and had to be left at a friend's farm near where Sun Dance was being held. The team that was going to be bringing the Peace Van back home was Jim Toren, Terry Stagman and Jon Burkindine.

After installing the necessary trailer hitch, lights, etc the towing vehicle was ready.

It was certainly a long drive up to Sun Dance in Minnesota. Long and boring but it had to be made.

It was good to get to our friend's farm and see the Peace Bus again. Soon it would be heading South and would be taken to Jon Blickenstaff's where there was a hugh barn it could be parked in while it was being fixed.

Finally ready Jon Burkindine is waiting for Jim Toren to get to the bus so they can begin the long journey home.

Jim stopped to look over some last minute papers just to make sure everything was ready

Finally out of the driveway and down the road. Hooray!

Some adjustments to the towing gear had to be made from time to time and Jon Burkindine is making some in this picture. After all this trouble they sure did not want to risk not getting the Peace Bus home!

More Adjustments being made to make sure the Peace Bus didn't fly off!

The trip home was just as boring and the trip up. There is a lot of flat land between Minnesota and Amelia Ohio.

Finally home. You can see the fatigue on their faces as Jim Toren and Jon Burkindine detach the Peace Bus in Jon Blickenstaff's barn.

She rests there today waiting for a transmission to be replaced.

The Peace Bus was used on several runs and walks while she was still running. It was fun to ride because people in cars honked their horns and yelled out their windows at us. People on the streets would yell at us also and everywhere we stopped we drew a crowd.

It was great fun and I hope the Peace Bus will ride again.
