Prisoners Of Conscience
The Run - Inspiration

The Prisoners Of Conscience Run had humble beginnings. Two friends of mine, Patrick Liteky and Erik Johnson , had been incarcerated for actions taken at the OREPA protest and the SOAW protest. I had been corresponding with both for quite some time and wanted to support them as much as possible. In addition, Julia Shideler , a fellow walker and Peacemaker, had crossed the line during the November, 2002 SOAW protest at Ft Benning and had not been sentenced yet.

Patrick was already serving time at the Crisp County Jail and Erik was to report on September 10th. There was a gathering of friends and supporters in Manchester on that day and I couldn't make it. I was really feeling bad about this and I felt I had let Erik down by not being there. So I decided to make a solitary Pilgrimage in support of the prisoners from Newport Kentucky to FCI Manchester where friend and fellow Peacemaker Erik Johnson was imprisoned.

I figured that it would take me several weeks to accomplish this walk. In planning such an action I wanted to let Jim know ahead of time that I would be gone so that he could watch over things at home in my absence. When I told him about this he immediately suggested that we do a run instead. I thought that this was agreat idea and immediately agreed.

The Prisoners Of Conscience Run was born!
