The heart of the Underground Railroad is the Maysville
Kentucky - Ripley Ohio area. Brother NorthStar wanted to
visit these places as part of his mission to connect to our
ancestors.
He ventured out on a cold and snowy day to make this journey
east from Peace Hostel Amelia up route 52, which runs parallel
to the Ohio River, to the Ripley Maysville area.
The first stop was in Maysville Kentucky. There is a museum
in Maysville dedicated to the Underground Railroad activities
that took place in and around the area. There were many artifacts
and pictures of the proples who were in the forefront of this
freedom movement.
Photographs of the pictures and artifacts were not allowed but
the folks there kindly allowed us one picture to commemorate Brother
NorthStar's visit. He had particular interest in an invention of John P.
Parker's who was a former slave from Virginia who had moved to Ripley Ohio,
started a foundry there, and was greatly involved in the
Underground Railroad's path to freedom.
After briefly viewing the area surrounding the Museum Brother
NorthStar wanted to visit Mr. Parker's house in Ripley.
The Parker House in Ripley stands facing the Ohio River which
is no more than 100 yards to the south. The house itself was
closed for the season so we could not see the inside but to
just be on this land where so much history had taken place
was a very moving and spiritual experience.
We walked around the grounds taking a few pictures to remember
the visit and then headed back to Peace Hostel Amelia. Just
another step in Brother NorthStar's great Pilgrimage for
peace.
