Update On The Peace Pilgrimage Sally Allen - 03/28/2004 The Woody Schwartz World Peace pilgrimage will commence Sunday May 1, 2004, at St. Jean-Pied-de-Port France. This walk gives you the opportunity to participate through the display of your messages of peac e, social justice, and caring for the our planet. These reasons are very compelling in face of the undermining of these values by current governments and political leaders. The walk will practice non-violence, respect and compassion for all peoples everywhere. The walk will cover over 800 kilometers, and take approximately 45-50 days. The terrain will be mountainous (three major mountain chains), forests, to high desert, climatically from cold rain and snow to dry and hot desert, with refugios along our way. We will be given a ÒpassportÓ which will be sta mped by the refugio who shelters us each evening. There are many historic villages and towns which welcome pilgrims. The culmination will be at a Catholic cathedral - where we will be registered as having completed the walk. This being a 'Holy Year', there will be many pilgrims in 2004. This is an ancient route, one of many from all parts of Europe and elsewhere - a path taken for many different reasons. Most all predominantly religious. None, to our knowledge, has been done for world peace. Given the bombings by terrorists in Madrid - and subsequent change of direction of the newly elected Spanish government - our walk will attract much attention. Perhaps others will join our walk - as most pilgrimages are solitary, we don't know what to expect at this point. Also memories and photos of Woody, if you were fortunate enough to know her - since five years ago in July she departed this earth - taking away her clear legacy of compassion, social justice, and the art of living peacefully and lightly upon the earth. Anyone who is so inspired is invited to join the pilgrimage, for a few hours, days, or even meet us in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain.
